Full moon, kind of…

So I had on my calendar that there was going to be a full moon early this week… I took some pictures of a sunset the night of in preparation. I’m standing outside and I see the moon peeking out from behind some clouds so I got a couple of pictures, that was the last I saw of the moon that night as the rain kicked in and the sky was completely covered. The next night was more of the same. Very disappointing.

This morning I was letting the dogs out and I saw the moon hanging there… I went and grabbed my camera and caught a “mostly” full moon. heh

Best of St. Louis

We recently took a trip to St. Louis, Missouri to visit my wife’s family. On one of the days we spent some time at the Transportation Museum Association… I got to spend some time with professional photographer, Tom Rollins. We talked about techniques and he was kind of enough to loan me a few of his lenses. It was a great time. Here are my favorite shots from the trip.

Bugs in captivity!

Our screened in porch tends to be a stop-over for quite the variety of insects.. the other day we had our first dragonfly visitor. Before we did the usual catch and release, I wanted to snap a couple of pictures so the boys could check out the bugs a bit closer up later. There’s a contest running on one of my favorite photography forums that I think it will qualify for too, so I’m pretty darn pleased with the whole series.

Storm Watching

There was some spooky looking clouds hanging low the other day I saw while we were driving around getting some errands done. They were making some awesome colors, so I clicked off some shots and played with some interesting crops and color settings to bring out what I saw with my eyes. Later the clouds served up a heavy storm with some spectacular lightning… I learned that capturing lighting with a camera was more difficult than you’d think and you don’t get to practice doing it every day.

Ok, so I got started tinkering with the last stuff and I couldn’t help looking at my new Photoshop Auto Tilt-shift Action. Whee! I didn’t have much quality material for tilt-shifting, but now that I know what kind of pictures work best I think I’ll keep my eye out for opportunities to take them. I put the original photo in with these as well so you can really see the difference.

High Dynamic Range and Panorama

I’ve been wanting to get out and some more experimenting… specifically with HDR (High Dynamic Range) and Panoramas. My photo appointment got rescheduled so I took that opportunity to go take some photos next to where my old house used to be. There was a real lack of clouds in the sky so the HDR photos didn’t come out as dramatic as I wanted them too, but it was fun doing the process.

Buildings and the park

Brought the camera into campus today to take along to our lunch at The Elbow Room, which was delicious. Being right in the heart of downtown it presented an opportunity to get some nice building shots. Later when I got home we headed to the park and I got some good ones there as well.

I’m active on a few Photography forums and I’ve started getting in on some of their Assignments… One I just finished was called “Jump!” The sky was very cool looking today, so I was trying to coax Carson into jumping over me so I could capture him against the deep blue background. It wasn’t until his mom stepped in as his jumping assistant did his confidence allow him to make the leap. I also got some shots of the boys riding around in the H3, the tulips in the front yard that suddenly added some red to their petals, and the good dogs.

IMA Exploration

My faithful model (Carson) and I stopped in to the Indianapolis Museum of Art to soak in some late afternoon sun and to explore some of the sights. The numbers were very fun to play around. Spring was definitely on display throughout the grounds.
Here’s my top three faves:

Plants and Country Sunset

Did a couple of other different things today; Plant close-ups and some sunset shots in the country.

Took some shots at lunch time of some signs of Spring around the IUPUI Campus:

On the way home from dinner I took some back roads and notice the sun painting a great scene across the open cornfields, so I stopped to snap some shots.
